Why Do Men Lose Erection During Sex?

The National Library of Medicine describes a penile erection, or tumescence, as the physiological process in which the penis fills with blood, typically triggered by sexual arousal. Achieving an erection requires the coordinated effort of the brain, nerves, hormones, and blood vessels. Disruptions in any of these functions can result in erectile difficulties.

In a 2021 NIH study surveyed 13,617 women about their experiences with male partners losing erections and its impact on their sexual health and well-being. The results of the study showed that 79% of the women had experienced their male partner losing an erection during sex. 

Experiencing a loss of erection during sex can occur at any age and is generally not a cause for concern. However, if it happens frequently, it may indicate an underlying physiological or psychological issue.

Potentially, yes! Difficulty maintaining an erection during sex can be a sign of erectile dysfunction (ED). If it has only occurred a few times, the issue might resolve on its own. However, if you frequently lose your erection during sex, there’s a strong possibility that you have ED – but don’t fear. As mentioned above, you are not alone and there are a wide variety of solutions to help tackle this issue.

What Are The Causes Of Losing An Erection During Sex?

Medical Disorders 

Your risk of erectile dysfunction (ED) is elevated if you have conditions like multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, or Peyronie’s disease. Additionally, trauma to the groin area can lead to ED, possibly as a result of nerve damage.

Alcohol Abuse

Regularly consuming more than 30 standard drinks per week over a prolonged period and engaging in binge drinking can lead to erectile issues.  

Smoking Addiction

Smoking increases your chances of experiencing erectile dysfunction (ED) by damaging your blood vessels, which can affect blood circulation and in turn lead to the symptoms mentioned above.

Psychological Factors 

Psychological factors influence how a man’s body responds in situations such as sexual activities. Factors like performance anxiety, relationship issues, stress, depression, and lack of stimulation can affect erectile performance.  

Medications

Various medications can cause ED as a side effect such as Antidepressants, Antihypertensives, Antiandrogens, Sympathetic Blockers and Recreational Drugs. If you are taking medication and notice a change in your erection, or your ability to maintain an erection it is important to address this with your prescribing physician.
