Premature Ejaculation Myths Debunked: Separating Fact From Fiction
Premature ejaculation (PE) is the most prevalent sexual dysfunction among men. Statistics indicate that it can affect up to 75% of men. Approximately seven out of ten men will encounter premature ejaculation at least once in their lifetime, with differing levels of intensity.
Premature ejaculation is a common sexual problem, affecting approximately 21–31% of adult men in Australia, regardless of their age, marital status, or ethnicity.
According to the Australian Family Physician (AFP), premature ejaculation is defined as the inability to control or delay ejaculation, resulting in dissatisfaction or distress for the person affected.
This sexual condition frequently remains unnoticed and untreated because patients often feel shame and reduced self-worth. It can lead to psychological distress, reduced self-esteem, anxiety, erectile dysfunction, diminished libido, and strained relationships.
Debunking common myths fosters open conversations about PE. When these topics are brought to light, it allows people to understand, empatise, and educate others, thereby helping to dismantle the common stigmas surrounding it.
Myth #1 – “Premature Ejaculation Only Affects Inexperienced Men.”
FACT – There’s a pervasive stereotype that only young and inexperienced men experience premature ejaculation, often due to excitement causing them to orgasm too quickly for their partner’s preference.
The first myth to dispel is that premature ejaculation is a one-time event. In reality, it is a medical condition characterised by a man’s inability to control ejaculation over a period of six months.
Men of all ages can suffer from premature ejaculation. Although older men are more prone to it.
Myth #2 – “Premature Ejaculation is the same with Erectile Dysfunction.”
FACT – There is a connection between PE and ED; however, it is important to note that these two sexual dysfunctions manifest differently. A recent study found that individuals with premature ejaculation have a fourfold risk of developing erectile dysfunction.
One contributing factor is aging. Men over the age of 60 are at a higher risk of developing serious health conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, which can affect their sexual health.
The occurrence of multiple sexual health issues can also play a role. Additionally, the mental state of the patient is a significant factor, as those suffering from mental health disorders like anxiety and depression are also at risk of developing PE.
Myth #3 – “Premature Ejaculation is just a Psychological Issue.”
FACT – While psychological factors can contribute to PE, they are not always the primary cause. Physical factors, such as an overly sensitive penis, hormonal imbalances, and unhealthy lifestyle choices that affect overall health, can also lead to premature ejaculation.
Myth #4 – “I have PE? Just Take a Viagra Pill.”
FACT – It’s important to consult a specialist (i.e. Doctor) first before taking something. Overmedication often leads to other serious health complications. While some people may label Viagra or PDE-5 Inhibitor as a cure-all for any sexual arousal problems, this is simply untrue.
It is important to take note that there are other ways of dealing with PE such as :
- Behavioural Therapy – Start and Stop Technique, Squeeze Therapy & Distracted Thinking.
- Counselling – Consulting a psychologist, psychiatrist, couples therapist, or sex therapist for assistance.
- Lifestyle changes – Greatly impact a man’s sexual health by incorporating a balanced diet, good sleeping routine and regular exercise.
Premature ejaculation (PE) stands as the most prevalent sexual health issue among men. Its global impact has led many men to feel ashamed of admitting their struggles, contributing to its increasing prevalence.
Creating a safe environment grounded in proper education about PE can encourage more people to open up about it, ultimately dismantling the stigma surrounding the condition. Early detection is crucial for improving PE, and consulting with an experienced physician can facilitate the eradication of this condition.
